Jack took early retirement and became a talented woodcarver. He was particularly keen on carving walking sticks. He sourced the wood himself from local forests and was entirely self taught.

 

He would sit for hours in his shed happily carving away whilst listening to old gramophone records, often losing track of time until his wife would bang on the door telling him his dinner had gone cold. Some examples of the sticks he carved are below.
